今天的重點是「最高級」的文法。

我們先討論一下「比較級」&「最高級」的差別。

「比較級」 --> 比較兩人 或 兩物時用

「最高級」 --> 比較三者 或 三者以上 ( 全部 )時用

要把形容詞從原型改成「最高級」方法與「比較級」差不多。

但要記得要在該形容詞前加一個 " the "。

單音節 / 少數的兩音節 ( +  est )

1.  通常在形容詞後面加上 est，就形成最高級。

e.g.  high  --  Yushan is the highest mountain in Taiwan.

e.g.  narrow  --  This house is the narrowest house I've ever seen.

2.  形容詞字尾已有 e 時，則只加 st。

e.g.  fine  --  We sell the finest wine in the country.

e.g.  simple  --  The simplest way to lose weight is to eat less.

3.  形容詞字尾是 y 結尾時，則去 y 加 iest。

e.g.  sly  --  What is the sliest animal in the world ?

e.g.  happy  -- This is the happiest day of my life.

4.  單音節形容詞字尾是「子音 + 母音 + 子音」時，就要重覆最後的子音，加 est。

e.g.  hot  --  She's the hottest girlfriend that he's had.

( the most + ) 大多數的兩音節 / 多音節 

e.g.  expensive  --  This car is the most expensive thing I own.

e.g.  difficult  --  Leaving you is the most difficult thing that I have ever done.

* 注: 有些兩個音節的形容詞是加 the most 或加 est 皆可的。

如...stupid  -->  stupidest / the most stupid 

或  polite  -->  politest / most polite。

不規則形容詞

也就是不加 est 也不加 the most，變換成另一個字。

good / well -- best  

bad  --  worst  

much  --  most ( uncountable nouns )

many  --  most  ( countable nouns )

little  --  least  

far  --  farthest  ( distance )

far  --  furthest  ( distance or time )
